DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help the North Carolina Coastal Federation by planting thousands of marsh plant plugs in an effort to restore the natural salt marsh at Carolina Beach State Park.  \n\n\n\nThe NC Coastal Federation\, NC State Parks\, and Backwater Environmental have partnered to restore and enhance tidal marsh habitat in a 13.5-acre highly disturbed area\, dominated by early successional invasive species composed primarily of Phragmites. Backwater finished constructing a shallow slough through the site in April\, and now an extensive planting of the site is needed.

DESCRIPTION:Does the thought of shucking an oyster send you running in fear of injury and embarrassment? Have you always wondered what oysters were all about and how you should be tasting them to fit in with your coast-loving friends? Whatever your knowledge or experience with oysters\, this class will be a fun way to both learn how to shuck these bountiful bivalves and also to debunk myths you might have heard about them (forget the “months with R” thing!). We’ll be enjoying 3 different oyster varieties from the North Carolina coast\, provided by Locals Seafood as we hone our shucking skills. You’ll learn the basics of shucking and get creative suggestions for toppings\, beyond cocktail sauce and horseradish. We’ll also discuss different types of oyster knives and supplies needed to host your own oyster tasting. No previous seafood experience is needed (and we’ll have some oysters pre-shucked to make sure we all get fed…). This class is taught by our co-owner (and part-time professional shucker)\, Nathan Williams. You’re welcome to bring your own alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages

DESCRIPTION:Event Dates\n\n\n\nGet ready for a fun afternoon on the water\, followed by a delicious oyster tasting as part of this unique farm-to-fork experience. \n\n\n\nJoin us for one of our spring kayak adventures on the beautiful shores of Broad Creek where you will tour the Coastal Federation’s demonstration oyster lease and living shoreline. As part of this excursion you will explore the pristine coastal marsh and unique inhabitants on sit-a-top kayaks generously provided by Outer Banks Kayak Adventures!    \n\n\n\nThe kayak tour will be guided by staff from Outer Banks Kayak Adventures and the Federation’s Coastal Specialist\, Victoria Blakey. Victoria will help participants understand how oyster farms and living shorelines work and point out unique birds and marine life found along the shoreline.  After kayaking\, you will retire to Blue Water Grill & Raw Bar for a sampling of a half dozen North Carolina oysters and Blue Water’s signature oyster shooter.

DESCRIPTION:Gather with friends of the Federation to enjoy steamed local North Carolina oysters as well as clam chowder\, corn chowder\, and tastings of raw locally-farmed oysters. In between sessions at the shucking table\, enjoy live music and a silent auction filled with great local coastal items. One drink is included (wine or beer) and additional drinks are available for purchase. \n\n\n\nProceeds from this event will support the Federation’s local efforts to restore our native oysters\, including new reefs in the lower Cape Fear River.
